Nebosh Inspection Success!

We had an unexpected visit from Nebosh during our last exam sitting on Friday 11th June.  As this was our first inspection since becoming an accredited centre 18 months ago we were all rather nervous to say the least!

However, our fears were unfounded.  Both Peter and Melissa were extremely helpful and friendly and couldn't have put us more at ease.  We were congratulated on our efficiency and organisation and our final report states that our invigilation and examination procedures were exemplary.  Our report has also signified that there are no corrective actions to be taken.

Needless to say we are very proud of our inspection result but would also like to thank both Peter and Melissa for their patient and helpful approach.

PQQ - Environmental criteria causing a problem?

Do you miss out on valuable tenders because your company doesn't have relevant environmental knowledge?

If so, the CIEH Level 2 Award in Environmental Principles and Best Practice could be the answer!

Many procurement decisions are made by assessing whether an organisation shows a commitment to environmental performance and improvement. Often, suppliers are asked to demonstrate this by means of a relevant environmental qualification or experience.

This low cost, one day course provides a basic understanding of environmental principles including law, energy efficiency, pollution, environmental impact and is suitable as starting point for anyone with a responsibility for environmental issues within your company.

Contact us now for details of our open courses (priced at just £70 + VAT per delegate) or if you really want to show a 'workforce' commitment then enquire about our in-house training.

Time off for training

New Rights! - Time off for training

Did you know that under the Employee Study and Training (Eligibility, Complaints and Remedies) Regulations 2010 you may have a right to request time off for training?

Dependent upon the size of your company and the amount of continuous weeks worked you may be eligible for unpaid time off for training.  Companies with at least 250 employees must consider the requests from employees who have 26 weeks or more of continuous service should they wish to undertake training that is relevant to their job.  From 2011 this will also apply to all companies regardless of size.

Bear this in mind when you're looking to study your next health and safety qual!

'Employers - Your Safety Obligations'

Stayed tuned for dates and times.

Managers - do you know your responsibilites?

Managers, did you know that many of you are not providing adequate health and safety in the workplace and that it is your legal obligation to do so?

No matter what type of employment you offer, be it adminstrative, engineering, manufacturing, retail etc, and no matter what size, you are bound by law to provide a duty of care to your employees and to any other person who may be affected by your activities.

In fact, if you have 5 or more employees you are also required to have a written Health and Safety policy and documented risk assessments.  This is not open to negotiation - IT IS REQUIRED BY LAW!  The Management Regs 1999 state that you must not only assess the risks within your workplace but also that you must control, monitor and review them.

Many managers, directors and board members are unaware of the responsibility they hold when it comes to Health and Safety, they often pay lip service to the issue and are ignorant to the fact that they may be held personally liable when duties are breached.  In the case of board members this may be as a collective measure or on an individual basis.

You only need to look at the Health and Safety Executives Enforcement Notice register or the local press to see the many companies who have breached safety legislation.  Many of whom may be in the same industry as yourself and didn't realise the costs involved with not taking adequate health and safety measures.

Once the initial set up is in place within your workplace, health and safety needn't be a burden.  Small daily or weekly tasks can be implemented by communicating with and involving the whole workforce.  The benefits of performing such simple measures such as reduced insurance premiums, better reputation, increased productivity, reduced staff absences will far outweigh the negatives.

Act today before the unthinkable happens.

Schools should take more risks!

Schools Should Take More Risks!

A very interesting article in the Times Education Supplement quoting Judith Hackitt, Chair of the HSE on how she blames media for encouraging misplaced fear of trips and science practicals within schools.

She feels that schools feel that the risk assessment process for even minor trips and activities is overwhelming and that the HSE want to help by implementing new guidance that replaces the four sets of health and safety documents currently used by schools.

Part of Judith's view is that taking risks forms a massive part of children's education. Communication with parents needs to be improved making them aware that their childrens's responsible behaviour forms part of any risk and also detailing areas where the school can and cannot protect their children.

Finally, this looks like a turning point for health and safety issues related to risks within education.
